Overview

This site contains a searchable catalog of objects found in the area around M31, studied with the Hectospec fiber spectrograph on the MMT. Types of objects include star clusters of various ages, individual stars in the foreground and actual members of M31, PNe, symbiotic stars, HII regions, and background galaxies. These objects were the subject of several Hectospec data papers published starting in 2009. Observed parameters in the catalog are detailed below, and were collected from those papers and several others. Some values available here are unpublished, such as the accurate HST coordinates, the [Fe/H] derived from strong lines, and many of the stellar velocities.

Also provided for most but not all targets is a link to a tar file that contains the optical MMT spectrum, HST images, and other high level products. The spectra themselves are in fits format. The data have been linearized in wavelength, with the first band being the spectrum, the second being a different extraction, the third the sky that was subtracted, and the fourth is the error in the flux. The data have been flux calibrated using standard stars. In general the fluxng is stable though there are some issues. First, the wavelength dependent throughput has not been fully corrected as a function of fiber. This can be seen by comparing spectra of the same target taken on different nights, and through a different fiber. Second, there is a red LED in the fiber positioner that contaminates nearby fibers. An attempt has been made to automatically remove this, but occasionally the correction is too strong, resulting in a spectrum that declines in the red, beyond 8000A.

The spectral files are given a name that refers to the target and the date observed. Thus some targets have several spectra because they were repeatedly observed. We have not combined these, nor have we deredshifted the data according to the derived velocity. The wavelength solution, in keeping with SDSS methods, has been corrected for the Heliocentric motion.
